Tell us about yourself and your role at CBRE
I'm always looking to challenge myself and learn new things. CBRE is quite young in Pakistan—2015—so my role itself is diverse. I am a country director responsible for country business and operations, which encompasses so much variety that I must continuously adapt in each situation as it arises. I enjoy the challenge and benefit from the progressive nature of the people I work with in the business. I’m always grateful that I get to laugh and be myself, working with brilliant people who are supportive and amazing to collaborate with. There’s certainly never a dull moment. How do you personally contribute to creating a more inclusive workplace culture at CBRE?
I’m a Saudi-born Australian/Pakistani and truly love engaging with a wide range of people. I believe bringing together different people, perspectives and ideas help create stronger bonds among individuals and ultimately stronger organizations.I believe the following points are key to building an inclusive culture, not only for my team, but overall:
Inspire your team to bring their whole, authentic selves to work. Actively listen and respond to them when they do.
Empower your team to take interpersonal risks and voice their opinions.
Psychological safety matters because it leads to healthier, more productive and inclusive teams.
I also actively encourage flexible working patterns that accommodate colleagues' home lives—religious festivals, caring for family, childcare responsibilities, etc.
What makes you proud to be part of CBRE?
I'm proud to be part of an organization with ambitious, creative and kind people. In September 2022, our business segment launched the Women’s Forum in Pakistan to promote Workplace Diversity. The Women’s Forum is a platform for women in CBRE Pakistan to come together, extend support to one another, nurture their skillset with on-the-job coaching and mentoring, as well as develop a strong network.I’m also really impressed with CBRE’s global reach. Recently, one of my colleagues wanted to move to Canada and he got an awesome opportunity with CBRE Canada’s Global Workplace Solutions business!
You mentioned being proud to be among ambitious, creative and kind people – who has inspired you the most?
I recognize my parents as my greatest influences. My father is that person who inspired me the most. He’s from a small town in Punjab, Pakistan and used to walk almost 10 miles every day to attend school. His resilience has been reflected throughout his personal and professional life. His life and work have motivated me every step of my journey.
