Midwest US Industrial Labor - 2023

In this report the largest 21 markets in the Midwest were evaluated based on the current transportation and warehouse labor situations. This report also looks at the historic rise in industrial demand as measured by industrial completions and net absorption, and the resulting increase in demand for skilled and affordable industrial labor.


Based on information collected by CBRE Labor Analytics Group (CBRE LAG), the Midwest has an average distribution labor score of 101, which is slightly ahead of the national average, with multiple markets greatly exceeding the national average. To learn more about the market labor scores refer to the market index methodology on page 9 of the report and a more in depth break down of the scores for each market on the individual market pages that follow.


As shown in Figure 1, 12 of the 21 Midwest markets have average distribution labor scores at or exceeding the national average.

Midwest T&W Employment grew 19.9% over the last five years and 41.0% over the last ten years. Overall T&W employment in the Midwest totals 1.1 million workers. For comparison overall employment had a 1.7% growth compared to five years ago and 9.0% over the last ten years.
